About this Position

The Urban Forestry Specialist is one of multiple urban forestry jobs in the City. They carry out the department’s public tree maintenance efforts and manages the trees and vegetation that affect public infrastructure or operations within the City. Additionally, this natural resource specialist contributes significantly to public outreach and events. The Urban Forestry Specialist must have knowledge of tree biology and be able to read, use, and follow GPS and GIS systems. This position is subject to being on-call on a regular basis and must be able to work after-hours, weekends, and during storms (as needed).

Responsibilities

  • Perform in-the-field activities to provide Urban Forestry service delivery
  • Provide tree risk assessments and mark tree planting locations
  • Coordinate contract services
  • Assist in activities associated with landscape code administration
  • Operate and assist with the department's tree maintenance programs
  • Monitor City tree plantings and perform or coordinate maintenance needs
  • Facilitate departmental programs and help develop public outreach and educational programs
  • Respond to tree maintenance needs
  • Promote sound urban forestry practices to other City departments and residents
  • Coordinate plant and landscape material delivery
  • Manage and maintain plant and material inventory
  • Lead the set up for volunteer, outreach, tree planting, and tree distribution events

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
    • Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Landscape Architecture, Urban Forestry, or Horitculture is preferred
  • 2 years of related experience and/or training
    • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 12 to 18 months of management experience
    • People and/or project management
  • Possess or be able to obtain within one (1) year of employment International Society of Arboriculture certification

  • Valid Oklahoma Driver's License and a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier

Necessary Skills

  • Ability to identify local tree species
  • Knowledge of tree biology and structure
  • Ability to read/follow/use maps and GPS or GIS systems
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively
  • Ability to work on a team and exhibit public relations skills
  • Willingness and availability to work after-hours, weekends, and during storms (as needed)
  • Ability to meet the required physical standards for this position
  • Ability to pass extensive background process and pre-employment drug, physical, and audio screenings
