JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervisor of the Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation, the City Forester
will be responsible for providing technical and professional guidance in the area of forestry.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Provide technical and professional guidance to City officials and the public in the
prevention and control of shade tree diseases within the city.
• Implement maintenance program by determining tree removals, trimming, and plantings
to ensure a quality urban tree canopy.
• Conduct field investigations to inspect public and private tree diseases and insects and
inform and advise homeowners on control or removal of trees.
• Assist Community Development staff with technical review and field inspection for Tree
and Landscape Permits.
• Manage and update asset management software related to the City’s tree inventory.
• Develop and manage contracts related to tree removal, trimming, planting, and collection
program.
• Serve as technical advisor and coordinate tree and shrub replacements for public
improvement projects.
• Mitigation of pest from public trees through physical, chemical, or cultural techniques.
• Develop and provide educational programs, outreach, and coordinate volunteer efforts
regarding urban forestry.
• Apply for and administer grants related to urban forestry and tree canopy.
• Enforce City ordinances relevant to urban forestry including diseased tree removal, corner
visibility, and assist with long grass and noxious weed violations.
• Generate reports on activities, operations, and other significant data.
• Generate and administer work orders for contractors to perform.
• Conduct research and perform other related duties as necessary or as assigned by the
Park Superintendent.

Supervisory Responsibility
Assist with the direction and daily tasks of interns and seasonal staff.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
• A Bachelor’s degree in Urban Forestry or related field or equivalent. At least (4) years of
prior forestry experience in an urban setting.
• An International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist license or the ability to
obtain certification within 6 months of hire
• Texas CDL preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Knowledge of and ability to identify various trees, shrubs, and plant species.
• Knowledge of and ability to identify various tree and vegetative diseases and infestations
and recommend corrective solutions.
• Ability to interpret and enforce City ordinances and other regulatory mandates.
• Ability to complete the essential duties and responsibilities of the position with or without
reasonable accommodations.
• Proficiently utilize technology, software, and applications in the office and field to manage
the City’s asset management system related to forestry.
• Knowledge of and ability to identify various noxious weeds as listed by the TX Department
of Agriculture.
• Knowledge of and ability to identify various prairie, wetland, and woodland plants native
to Texas.
