What’s the Role?
We’re looking for a self-motivated, safety-oriented, and diligent individual with exceptional customer service skills who enjoys working outdoors to take on the role of Tree Trimmer III in the Forestry Division of the Community Services Department. The City's Tree Trimmers perform a variety of duties including working from the ground and in a bucket truck to trim, prune, plant, grind tree stumps, drag brush, operate the chipper, install street banners, and otherwise maintain Street and City owned trees. The City’s Tree Trimmer III position is also responsible for the daily performance and on-going training for the Tree Trimmer I/II positions. The Essentials Tree Trimmer III

  • Three years of increasingly responsible tree maintenance experience.
  • Education equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade supplemented by courses in arboriculture, pesticide management, or a related field, plus completion of City’s or college-level supervisory training course prior to or within two years of appointment.
  • Possession of a valid Class B California Driver License.
  • Possession of a valid Class A California Driver License may be required in some assignments.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate may be required by the position.

Bonus Points:
Tree Worker Climber Specialist Certification issued by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA)
Arborist Certification issued by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA)

What You’ll Do

  • Operate small power equipment and hand tools to cut and trim trees on City streets and in City parks.
  • Safely and efficiently load brush, logs, and leaves into trucks.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of tree identification and tree maintenance practices.
  • Maintain tree trimming equipment, including chain saws and hand saws.
  • Oversee the completion and sharing work orders for all work performed on a daily basis.
  • Assist in the inspection of priority tree service requests.
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of individualized training programs for the Tree Trimmer I/II’s.
  • Engage with the public regarding tree work.
